I always respected her ability to be kind and open but also no nonsense. She was no pushover. My heart goes out to her survivors. Her siblings were close and caring. God give you comfort.
Maybell was my Sr. Prom date our last year at Sumner. I remember being very nervous on the way to her home driving my mother's car with permission to stay out as long as Maybell's father said she could be out. I remember him being a very nice gentleman and her mother being very gracious and acting glad to see me. I showed up with the obligatory corsage and then Maybell came down the stairs in her gown. Until now I have not really re-lived that moment but thinking back she was very, very lovely that evening and we had a good, fun time at the Prom. I remember sitting in front of her home at the designated time of her curfew set by her Dad, that very nice gentleman, because notwithstanding me thinking in my own little mind that I was "all that" I was not about to disobey his instructions of when our date was over. Because I knew that had I not been where I was supposed to be at the time I was supposed to be there, he would not have given me a lecture directly but would have picked up the phone and called my Dad and that my fellow classmates was not something I would wish on anyone; having to face my Dad when he was unhappy with something I had not done that I was supposed to do.
But everything ended well. I got a kiss on the cheek from Maybell and made it home before MY CURFEW safe and sound.
My deepest condolences to Maybell's extended family and I wish her safe and peaceful repose in God's arms until we meet again. God Bless.
